The Drum is brought to you by Ghetto Film School, which is a non-profit filming organisation based in New York City from which names like Lee Daniels, Spike Jonze and David O Russell all graduated http://www.ghettofilm.org. Their main focus is to form the next generation of American story tellers, which is clear when one has a look at some of their big name guest lecturers such as Oscar winning, director Steve McQueen, American Hustle star Amy Adams, South Park screenwriter Matt Stone as well as the renowned Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind cinematographer, Ellen Kuras. The school was found in 2000, in the South Bronx of New York City. The Drum forms part of their fellowship program, which is their foundation course and allows students the opportunity to develop and eventually produce their own stories in a foreign destination. This is then followed by an industry internship.
So when students got the opportunity to come shoot their thesis film in South Africa, they were looking for a well established production company with experienced crew to aid in this mentorship program. Mannequin Films was more than willing to step in and help out where necessary. The Drum is a 15 minute, heart-warming short film shot in and around Gauteng based townships.
