Based on the popular Bengali novel, Chander Pahar, Mountain of the Moon is a feature film starring Indian actor Dev along with local talent such as Gerard Rudolph and Martin Cito Otto. Shree Venkatesh partnered with Mannequin Films for a second time around, in order to bring to life this remarkable story, which is completely shot in South Africa. The film follows the story of a young Bengali man who yearns for adventure and would like nothing more than to travel to Africa. In a stroke of luck, he lands a job as a clerk at the Uganda Railway. And so his journey begins, filled with wild animals, a live volcano as well as a mythical creature known as The Bunjib. This is a story of great friendship, legendary exploration as well as true courage.
Mountain of the Moon was a major hit at the Tollywood Box Office and since it’s release gained an extensive cult following. According to critics this is not only Dev’s most memorable performance up until now, but it is also a breakthrough film for director Kamaleshwar Mukherjee who have only directed 2 films prior to this. Due to its massive popularity it was also released in the US where it had a very successful theatre run.
Mountain of the Moon is one of the first Indian feature films to be shot mostly in South Africa. With filming taking place over a period of two months, many different locations were used including, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West Province, Freestate, Northern Cape as well as Kwa-Zulu Natal.
